Worn Again Virgin Collection - as featured on www.smartplanet.com

Take one beardy international airline, add a boutique eco designer and mix with a desire to eclipse Anya Hindmarch's smash hit bag. The result: Worn Again Virgin, a hip new range of recycled bags made from old Virgin Atlantic seat covers. SmartPlanet's been treated to an exclusive preview before the official launch on Monday, so read on for the lowdown.
Designed by eco footwear brand Worn Again, the first limited edition run of 2,000 bags were produced from 1,000 old seat covers. Virgin hopes the range will help it reach its target of halving the airline's aircraft landfill waste by 2012.
Other recycled materials in the collection include bike inner tubes and factory scrap metal. There are four designs in total -- the Lydia (shoulder bag), Ollie (wash bag), Romero (handbag) and Sherman (messenger bag).
To ensure labour standards and cut transport miles, Worn Again Virgin manufactured the bags in Portugal rather than China. Some of the bags' materials -- such as bicycle tyres -- have reportedly been sourced locally in Portugal.
While it's tempting to dismiss the bags as a green fig leaf for a carbon-spewing airline, I'm inclined to applaud them as a tiny but welcome step. Plus they look darn cool.
Available to buy very soon in the Terra Plana on-line store!
