For two years, the most eccentric European capitals has been going green. Shops, restaurants and hotels are now the trend. Follow our "green guide" for ethical shopping.
Did you know? A journey from Paris to London by Eurostar emits ten times less CO2 than the same trip by plane (1). Since launching in 2007 of its "Travel Green", the Franco-British also control the power consumption of its trains, recycle the uniforms of its employees and compensates for all its CO2 emissions at no extra cost to the traveler. Sound reason to pass under the English Channel ...
Once arrived in London, continue on your eco-launch and made a first stop at Acorn restaurant, located a few steps from St Pancras station. Decorated in green and brown, it enjoys a seasonal menu based on fresh, local and where possible organic carrot soup and chili decorated with toasted hazelnuts, grilled mackerel with tomato, organic brownie ... A real treat. But here, it is not just the content of the plate that is green. "We use recycled paper, have set up the sorting and have our own machine to compost all food waste," says chef Arthur Potts, who also launched the Waterhouse, near Regent's Canal, its second green restaurant.
Three subway stations of St Pancras, in the heart of the City, Liverpool Street area has also been green. For example, the already cult Andaz hotel, which has 267 rooms on six floors. His ecological approach? Toilets using 80% less water, a computer-controlled fuel efficient boiler or a policy of buying locally. Unfortunately the breakfast - a la carte and served disappointing after a long wait - is not up to the 5-stars ... Prefer a really good breakfast or lunch at Canteen, a sort of box design installed in the very trendy Spitalfields market. A la carte, local products without any additive and an equally beneficial.
Footwear and natural chocolate fair
Liverpool Street is also a starting point for the "Green Tour" organized by the London Insider (2). During the eco-tour of three hours, we discover at the foot of the eco-designed buildings, shops just as Montezuma chocolate, or even ethical fashion.
In this area, do not miss the brand Terra Plana (3). Its credentials: trendy shoes made from natural materials and recycled without glue. On the shelves, boots made with vegetable dyes mixed shoes bark of coconut and recycled sneakers in sponges. One of the four London stores Terra Plana is close to the Borough Market, the oldest market in the capital located within walking distance of London Bridge. A must for lovers of organic green market that is very popular with Londoners. You will enjoy on the go vegetarian, spinach and celery based smoothies, carrot cakes and cheesecakes without gluten or very fragrant exotic dishes.
A little further west, in the district of Chiswick, store Eco Age (4) has just blown his first candle. Heated by solar panels and insulated by a thick wall, it contains paper chipboard furniture, bamboo fiber bath towels, chairs made from recycled game consoles or cushions made from old rooms air. Also in range: the trimmings of lingerie and pajamas in silk or organic cotton Eco-boudoir signed.
Finally, to complete the trip on a green festive note, go to Club 4 Climate, the only nightclub in London environmentally correct, in the heart of fashionable Islington. Cocktails bio, reusable cups, toilet without water, without solvents, paint, lighting, low ... Here, everything is green. Even the dance floor that turns into electricity the energy released by the steps and jumps, clubbers. What power the nightclub. A good excuse to electrify the track until the end of the night.
