TERRA PLANA SHOE AMNESTY
| 29th April 2008 |
Think On Your Feet
For the month of May 2008, TERRA PLANA will offer a £10 discount to every customer who brings in an old pair of unwanted shoes in store to be recycled - all brands are welcome.
- In the UK alone, over 330 million pairs of new shoes are purchased each year with a similar amount going to landfill or the incinerator.
- In total, 25.5 million tones of household waste is collected each year in the UK, just under 27% of this is recycled or composted.
- UK recycling currently saves between 10 - 15 million tones of greenhouse gases each year, this is equivalent to taking 3.5 million cars off the road.
TERRA PLANA is working with THE EUROPEAN RECYCLING COMPANY to lower the amount of shoes that are sent to landfill. The unwanted shoes will be collected from the TERRA PLANA stores in London by THE EUROPEAN RECYCLING COMPANY, who will then sort through them and sell the re-usable footwear on to Third World countries. The shoes are then locally refurbished and resold at affordable prices within those local areas. In addition to reducing the amount of footwear sent to landfill & supplying communities with much needed footwear, this scheme is also providing a means of earning a living in countries where employment opportunities are sparse.
